Research Writing & Publishing Help

Copy editing is what most people think of as "proofreading" but it's a bit more than that. This means you have finished the first draft and your purpose, structure, and logical flow are clear but you need help with correctness (grammar, spelling, punctuation, and usage), consistency, completeness, and accuracy. Your citations and references (and bookmarks and in-text hyperlinks) will be edited for style and accuracy (APA, CMoS, IEEE, inter alia), and I will make sure your paper conforms to your journal submission or assignment guidelines.

This is where a second pair of research-oriented eyes can correct and smooth your writing, AND, more valuably, indicate where you may need to cite or better support a claim, provide a clearer context or more detail so readers (and reviewers) can understand your data, or get you back on track if you wander off the path.

If you have completed all reviews and revisions (your document has undergone structural, stylistic, and copy editing and is ready for publication) I will do a final check for minor mechanical errors, consistency of elements, and adherence to a style sheet or submission guidelines (such as word count and formatting). This will also include checking your in-text citations and references (APA, CMoS, IEEE, inter alia).

For writers who are having trouble getting started or moving forward, I can provide guidance on focusing your ideas, creating an outline, fleshing out a draft, revising the draft, and formatting your final document. For professionals submitting a research paper to a journal, I can assist with submission guidelines. For students writing research papers for high school or university classes, I can help you through all steps of the writing process. 

For writers who need more hands-on support, I provide structural, stylistic, and copy editing as a package. This may include reorganizing sections, paragraphs, and sentences as well as substantial rewriting for clarity. For this level of editing, you will have finished a first draft but you may need help with clarifying your purpose, understanding the structure of your paper, using linking for logical flow, or with sentence or paragraph development and paragraph unity. Extensive rewriting might be needed if English is not your first language.
